A look into Sarah Kinsley's debut album 'Escaper'

The highly anticipated debut album from alluring singer-songwriter Sarah Kinsley arrives September 6th.

An artist whose music effortlessly joins her passion for both classical and pop music, Sarah Kinsley is on the road to releasing her debut album Escaper on September 6, 2024.

The album’s first two singles, “Last Time We Never Meet Again” and “Starling” began Sarah’s latest era with poetic juxtaposition, as one centres on ending a friendship by choice while the second celebrates platonic soulmates. The latest single, “Realms” is cinematic and hypothetical, perfect for pondering life’s what-ifs while frolicking in the late summer grass.

The 24-year-old has earned a reputation for crafting beautifully alluring lyrics and euphoric-sounding music on her four previous EPs, Ascension, Cyprus, The King and The Fall. Sarah’s vocals are airy, emotive and captivating, the music blending sounds from all corners of the musical realm - something that comes naturally to the multi-talented instrumentalist who grew up listening to and playing classical music.

Working for the first time with another producer on a full-length project, Escaper explores what it means to escape, and who we become when we do. It’s about love, life, loss, and all the questions that come with our existence. The subject matter is as moving and existential as the musical landscapes Sarah builds around them. Despite being her debut album, Escaper comes with great anticipation from Sarah’s fans and the music community overall.

Q&A with Sarah Kinsley:

Q: "As a songwriter, do you find the personal meaning of your songs changes at all once you’ve released them for others to hear?"

A: "I think the best thing is sort of watching a song take on its own meaning with people. When “The King” came out, that song was purely me trying to convince myself that getting older and moving through time was going to be ok - that I was going to have this very sort of forceful, beautiful and powerful beginning of my 20s. When it kind of went insane, it became way more about like romantic love, and people talking about playing the song at weddings and all these different things. That interpretation was so far removed from my initial reading which was purply about self-love, but it’s very interesting to watch. I don’t think it necessarily changes how I think about the song, but it does make me very excited just because it's like these words that I've chosen in this specific order mean something very specific to me and somehow they have enough ambiguity that it means something completely different to someone else. I just appreciate that a lot."

Q: "People often describe music through colours. Personally, I have a playlist series inspired by fruit flavours – If you were to describe your upcoming album Escaper as a colour or flavour, what would it be and why?"

A: "Flavour is really interesting. For the colour, I would definitely say I was very obsessed with the colour like citrine when I was making the record because a lot of the record felt very gold and this sort of yellow aura to me. I feel like I also just associate that kind of warmth with enlightenment so I feel like I was kind of biased in that way too. Flavour, this is so strange - not that it's like a strange question just that I have literally no idea. Um, I would say…I don't know, I really don't know. I was about to say sweet and then I was like, ‘I don't think it's sweet.’ I think savoury makes a lot more sense, like something that kind of impacts you more."
