Sweet Spotlights: Dora Jar's 'No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire'

Dora Jar invites listeners into the imaginative and emotional world that is her debut album.

About The Album:

Breakthrough alt-pop star Dora Jar recently released her debut album, No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire - a 13-track project that continues the artist’s genre-bending, funhouse style established by her previous EPs, Digital Meadow and comfortably in pain.

This album showcases Dora’s range of influences and skills. Songs like “Puppet” and “Behind The Curtain” offer listeners upbeat, electronic and dance-y moments, while other tracks are more stripped down and intimate, like “This Is Why” and “Debbie Darling.”

The writing process for Dora’s debut album began about two years ago, with much inspiration coming from her experiences with impostor syndrome and confronting her fears - things she still faces, but now feels more comfortable navigating.

“...I feel like the only thing I can do is music, and then sometimes I’ll feel very unsure of what it is I'm even saying and it’s hard to trust the mystery. I think I’m just getting more comfortable with being in the mystery and sharing from that place and not feeling the need to have it all making sense and put on a platter for people to easily understand. I think my nature is a bit confusing and I feel confused a lot of the time, but I feel now braver to share from that place.”

Q&A with Dora:

Q: “Your music and persona are both very colourful. What do you find inspiration in for aesthetics, whether that be outfits, album covers or tour visuals?”

A: “I like colours and I love old movies that have both cartoon and live action in them, like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I like textures like paper - I like wearing paper, like the paper bag princess, for some of the visualizers on the album. I like potato sacks and I like Fantasia 2000.”

Q: “What does the phrase 'being on fire' mean to you?“

“I sometimes I feel like I'm on fire and I’m full of action and I just keep going and I can't relax and sometimes that feels really good and sometimes it's very crazy.”
